I still remember my first pair of flared jeans in the early 2000s...the way they skimmed over my favorite platform shoes, making me feel effortlessly cool. Back then, the wider the leg, the better, and nothing made an outfit feel more put together than a great pair of flares. Fast-forward to today, and flared denim is having a well-deserved revival, but this time with a refined, modern twist. Whether you loved them the first time around or are discovering their magic for the first time, this iconic silhouette is back and better than ever.
The Best Flared Denim
Yes, you read that right: flared denim is making a major comeback. This iconic style, known for its flattering wide-leg fit, is back with a modern twist that blends nostalgia with contemporary flair. Whether you're revisiting this classic look or embracing it for the first time, it is truly the perfect addition to any wardrobe, providing a chic and timeless silhouette that complements a variety of styles. With the perfect balance of past and present, now is the ideal time to embrace this flattering, versatile cut.
What is Flared Denim Anyway?
Flared denim refers to jeans that are fitted at the thigh and gradually widen from the knee down, creating a subtle or bold bell-bottom effect. This design not only makes a striking visual statement but also creates a flattering balance, elongating the legs and offering a beautiful silhouette for every body type.
There are a few different types of flared denim to explore, each offering a unique take on the classic design:
Traditional Bell-Bottoms – The classic '70s version, with a dramatic flare from the knee down, perfect for making a bold statement.
Bootcut – A more subtle flare that’s fitted through the thighs and gently widens at the knee, perfect for everyday wear and pairing with boots.
Crop Flare – A cropped version that hits above the ankle, offering a modern, edgy look that’s great for warmer weather and pairing with heels or sneakers.
Wide-Leg Flare – A looser, more relaxed take on flare denim, with a wider leg opening that adds to the retro vibe but remains modern and chic.
A Blast from the Past: The History of Flared Denim
Flared denim is a timeless style that has been popular in several fashion eras, with its roots tracing all the way back to the 1970s. In this era, flared denim became synonymous with the bohemian lifestyle, embraced by rock stars, hippies, and free spirits alike. Flared denim was more than just a trend; it was a symbol of freedom and self-expression. Celebrities like Cher and Mick Jagger rocked the look, and it quickly became a staple in every fashion-conscious person's wardrobe. The exaggerated bell-bottom cut flared out dramatically from the knee down, creating a bold silhouette that became a defining feature of '70s fashion. Paired with flowing blouses, tie-dye tees, and platforms, flared denim was the epitome of cool.
Fast forward to the 2000s, and flared denim was back in full swing, albeit with a more refined twist. While the wide-leg flares of the '70s were still beloved, this time around, it was embraced in a slightly slimmer cut, creating a more polished version that could be dressed up or down. The mid-2000s saw the flare style evolve into more subtle bootcut options, which were favored by celebrities and fashionistas for their flattering fit.
As with all great fashion trends, flared denim has stood the test of time and is now a classic staple, making its triumphant return. Today, it’s all about celebrating that retro vibe while embracing modern versatility and Lyssé’s flare denim is leading the charge.

I just bought the lizzette flare denim, the one with bows on the back. They are so cute! And possibly the most comfortable pair of jeans ever! And to answer your question, my early 2000’s flare jeans were always paired with crazy high platform shoes.
I love pairing them with sneakers!
My favorite way to style flared denim was with a baby tee and super high, platform sandals in the 2000s!
